'Modal' may appear exotic but actually it is obtained from the beech tree. The word gained popularity on linen and clothing labels not too long ago, although it has been in existence for quite a while.  It is and can be used for high ends scrubs line.

Modal fabrics were first treated in Japan in the year 1951 and were first marketed in 1964. Modal has become very popular and is highly wanted by every textile buyer, leading to a surge in the number of manufacturers who now produce it. A very good reason for this popularity is traced to the advent of modal scrubs that have now made scrubs much better than they have ever been.

What makes modal so popular?

Modal has a lot of properties that are truly incredible. It is a fabric with characteristics that wouldn't have been thought possible before the 1950s. But like any great invention, modal has done a lot more than just being invented; it has reshaped the textile world.

What are the characteristics of Modal?

There are a number of characteristics for modal which we have earlier mentioned that makes it such a great fabric. These characteristics are:

  1. Very soft to feel: modal is a very soft fabric and when touched, it tends to give a feel of silk and wool.
  2. Crease resistant: Modal is resistant to creasing. This is due to high quality processes it has undergone. You can imagine the beauty of a light weight fabric that does not crease, right?
  3. Silky: Silkiness is also another good property of modal. These fabrics are smoothest to feel and they barely cause any form of uncomfortable feeling.
  4. Absorbent and Air-Permeable: Modal absorbs and lets air pass through it easily. This makes it breathable. In modal fabrics, heat is barely felt. This also explains why it is constantly cool when touched.
  5. Dye Suitability: This fabric works brilliantly with dye. That is, it soaks dye easily, thereby bringing forth bright, sparkling colors when dyed.
  6. Shrinkage resistance: Modal has less resistant to shrinking than cotton. Consequently, it does not pill much because of the strength of the fibers it has been made with.

How to take proper care of modal

Modal is similar to cotton materials in many ways and hence, the guidelines for cleaning cotton can be followed to clean it. Modal is suitable for washing in any level of temperature. The water temperature does not matter when washing modal. This is another advantage that it has over other fabrics. However, it is advisable to check the special instructions that come with the fabric. Some parts might require special treatments.

Chlorine bleach should not be used at its full effects. It will cause wear to the fabrics of the modal and will also drain the colors of it. Weak solutions are also not recommended either  in case of stain removal or enhancement of whitening. It is instead advised to use oxygenated bleaches. Soak in solution for two hours and rinse.

Modal does not allow for high temperature when drying. A low or medium temperature is preferable.

How to iron modal scrubs

Modal fabrics, like your modal scrubs, may need ironing to look smooth. However, if the modal fabric is blended or with some special treatments, you don’t need to iron it at all. This makes modal as an easy care fabric. If you do need to iron the fabric, the iron must not be very hot; in fact, a very low heat level is advised

Should I wear modal scrubs?

Absolutely yes!  They are very comfortable and break no law anywhere. No moral or ethics is against it.
